This is a wart I noticed recently on the back of my beautiful 9 year old lab/pit mix named Daisy. I want to know if this is something I should get checked out by a vet. If you need more pictures, please let me know. FYI, she is perfectly healthy otherwise.

Hi Jeanine,
Yes, you have diagnosed it correctly. This is a wart on Daisy’s back. See our page on dog warts for general information.

These are benign growths that will appear on the skin of dogs when they are over 7-8 years of age. In my experience, they seem to be due to excessive vaccination, leading to a condition that holistic veterinarians refer to as ‘vaccinosis’. According to Dr Richard Pitcairn’s book, Complete Guide to Natural Health for Dogs and Cats, there is no simple formula for treating warts, as it is first necessary to address the underlying tendency with individualized treatment (called constitutional prescribing in homeopathy).

See our section for topical dog wart treatments that can be done while your dog is being treated holistically.

In the meantime, find a holistic veterinarian who can provide constitutional treatment for Daisy and who can write an exemption form to avoid future vaccinations.

Another resource for vets knowledgeable in homeopathy is AVH.org.

Take care,
Dr. Carol Jean Tillman
