My shih-tzu is 12 weeks old. I feel like the vet is giving her a lot of shots and I am wondering if they are all necessary or could be spaced out some.

She’s scheduled to get her last set of shots including rabies in three weeks.

Dear Subscriber,
Thank you for choosing Organic Pet Digest to search for the best health advice for your pet. Your question raises a subject that comes up more and more often now, especially as we see more side effects from vaccinations, and more chronic illness in our pets, (and our children). Many of these problems are directly related to receiving too many vaccinations.

Holistic veterinarians do not like to even start vaccinations in a puppy until he/she is over 12-14 weeks of age. That is the age the immune system is becoming more mature, and the mother’s antibodies (passive immunity) are starting to wear off. Obedience classes for puppies are also realizing that puppies will not have had all of their vaccinations, but encourage owners not to wait to complete all of the vaccinations, but to make sure you start socializing/training your puppy during that magic window of 10-14 weeks of age when the puppy is receptive to learning correct behavior. Make sure that the classes you attend with your puppy are held in clean indoor surroundings, and try to ensure that all puppies have had veterinary examinations and are free of internal and external parasites.

Please check out our in depth details on vaccinations here at Organic Pet Digest.

Good Luck,
Carol Jean Tillman, D.V.M.
