Maltese with TWO Eye Infections

Maltese with TWO Eye Infections

Maxx

My 3 year old Maltese started with an eye infection two weeks ago. We took him to our vet who did a glaucoma test and said he had conjunctivitis. She put him on eye drops of neomycin polymyxin dexamethasone of 5ml.

After almost a week and drops were gone he still wasn’t better – seemed to maybe clear a little for a few day, but got worse.

We took him back to our vet who did another glaucoma test and put him on more of the same drops. Now a week later and we picked up a third bottle or the same drops from same vet and she wants max to see an eye specialist.

His eyes are very crusted and swollen inside and around. Drainage is greenish and his third eyelid is showing. His eyes are also very bloodshot.

He seems to be in good spirits but that comes and goes since he is sometimes not wanting to open his eyes.

Maxx eats Trader Joe’s premium lamb meal with no corn wheat or soy. We give him veggies, bananas, eggs and fish regularly with his food.

He is not very active as far as walks go but usually has a few play bursts per day and he is a great cuddlier.

Hi Lisa,
From the photo, poor Max certainly looks uncomfortable. Just to ease his discomfort, you could place 2-3 drops of sweet almond oil into each eye 4-6 times per day. This might soothe the cornea and give him a little relief while treating him.

Other conditions to consider in a long haired breed might be ingrown eye lashes, (dystichia), dry eye, (lack of sufficient tear film), or scratches on the cornea of both eyes.

I am not sure why your veterinarian is only checking for glaucoma, and not doing a Schirmer Tear test, flourescein dye test or taking a culture. Perhaps this is where you should get a ‘second’ opinion from an veterinary ophthalmologist! And in the meantime, you could give Max one of these homeopathic remedies by mouth to treat the inflammation, drainage and pain.

Choose one of the following:

Mercurius vivus, or Pulsatilla 6C or 12C potency. Both are useful for greenish discharge.
Or Aconite 6C or 12C, a very good remedy for eye inflammation. All of these are common remedies available at health food stores. Choosing only one remedy, give one pellet by mouth every hour for three hours, then every 8 hours for 2-3 days.

And make an appointment with a veterinary ophthalmologist for a more specific diagnosis.
