Our black Labrador Retriever’s third eyelid is halfway closed and is discharging crusty matter. He’s had this for about three days.

We thought maybe he poked it in the woods. We’ve flushed it with saline but it doesn’t seem to help. He’s ten years old.

Comments for Dog’s Third Eyelid Halfway Closed

by: Dr. Carol Jean Tillman Hi Mark,
It sounds like your dog may have a foreign body lodged behind the third eyelid, and/or he DID poke himself in the eye and now it is infected.

You need to take him to your veterinarian ASAP to have it examined. They will put in some drops to numb his eye, then look behind the third eyelid, and they may also stain the eye to check for a scratch on the cornea.

He will probably need some antibiotic ointment or drops to treat his eye. You do not necessarily need to look for a holistic veterinarian, just take him in to the nearest vet!
