My dog PJ is having very large loose bowel movements, part watery, and is apparently regurgitating some foamy stuff too. He is a Chihuahua/Pomeranian mix, is 5.5 pounds and is 19 months old.

He started this on Thursday afternoon, yesterday seemed sorta okay but 48 hrs later we are seeing the same symptoms.

He belongs to my 96 yr old mother who adores him. I hear raw pumpkin is good to settle a ‘hot’ stomach?? Please helpppp!

I’ve heard cooked pumpkin though not raw…But you can also mix it in with some protein like a few tiny pieces of cooked chicken breast…You gotta put something delicious with it, to tempt them to eat…There are free pet recipes online…Pull off from canned & dry dog food & switch to human grade food for a few days…The dog foods still have problems…If all the symptoms clear up you know it’s the dog foods & you know what you have to do- cook for that dog something nice & fresh everyday & be thankful that this will save you thousands in future unused vet bills…

P.S. The phenomenon you’re experiencing is this- instead of trashing the whole corrupt load of too high glue wheat gluten content that came from Anying Biologic in China, the worldwide pet companies & suppliers compensated for the gluey-ness of their recipes by adding things like flaxseed oil to counteract the constipatory action of the glue gluten…
So the dog is vomiting from the wheat gluten content & is having diarrhea from the flaxseed oil laxation…
The dog will be fine, just stop feeding prepared pet food & cook fresh…The process will help you understand what is happening better & you can transfer this new knowledge to humans-because the gluten problem is in the human food chain too…
They just boiled the wheat too long, not enough water, & it became like glue…They were trying to make it higher protein content…But of a major screw-up…Worldwide…People are dying of heart attacks, kidney failures are up, aneurysms…
The laxative solution is a viable stop-gap…
But if you can avoid the whole gluten issue altogether by not feeding it in the first place, you don’t have to try to compensate.
An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure…(or litre & kilogarm if you are in metric)…

Hi Colleen,
PJ may be having some Irritable Bowel Syndrome problems. I would ask your mother what diet she feeds PJ, some diets can be harder to digest than others. Also, you may need to consider some other conditions that could be causing these symptoms, such as parasites, foreign body, or lack of digestive enzymes.

Treatment would depend on the cause of the diarrhea and vomiting. In the meantime, you do not want PJ to become dehydrated. Take away all solid food, and allow liquids only for 12-24 hours. (Water, chicken or turkey broth, or beef bouillon.) This will allow his GI tract to ‘rest’.

If PJ continues to vomit, please take him to a veterinarian for hydration with SQ or IV fluids. As Sari commented above, canned pumpkin, not raw, can be helpful with chronic diarrhea situations. If this is an acute onset, I do not think the canned pumpkin would be necessary.

In the meantime, if he responds to the liquid diet for 12 hours (without vomiting), then you will need to gradually transition him to a bland food, like chicken or turkey baby food. Feed small amounts, 1/4-1/3 jar, each time, 3-4 hours apart. Add in L. Acidophilus (probiotics) to each meal (about 1/4 the human dose.) This will replenish the ‘good’ bacteria to his GI tract. You may need to continue the bland diet for 2-3 days.

Slippery elm is also a good herb to help control loose stool. The dose would be 1/4 the human dose 3-4 times daily.

When the stool is more formed, he is not vomiting, and he is eating ok, then finding a good balanced diet will be the goal. As Sari mentioned, there can be many unhealthy aspects to prepared canned and dry dog foods.

I am a big proponent of raw diets for dogs, but the toy breeds are usually not very accepting of a raw diet. So you may have to find a compromise between some cooked/home prepared diets and good quality canned foods.
