Vegan Okara Protein-Rich dog treats
by Susan Labandibar
(Boston, MA, USA)
1/2 cup okara (a product leftover from making soymilk and tofu)
1/2 cup cooked soybeans with accompanying liquid
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons oil
2 tablespoons water
3/4 cup whole wheat flour
Blend all ingredients except whole wheat flour in a food processor until the mixture has the consistency of hummus. Add the whole wheat flour and process until the dough resembles sticky Play-Doh.
Lightly grease a cookie sheet and preheat oven to 325 degrees. Roll the dough into one or two long cylinders, about 3/4-inch thick. Cut into 3/4-inch lengths and place on cookie tray. Flatten with your fingers as for peanut-butter cookies. (Wet hands if necessary.)
Bake 30 minutes, remove from tray and let cool completely.
Makes about 50 treats.
These treats are more than 15% protein by weight. Each treat has 22 calories.
