My one year old American eskimo has developed an area on his mouth (snout) that has lost hair, is swollen, is very red and occasionally has white “acne looking” bumps where the whiskers or hair comes out of the skin. It has been there for almost two months now, maybe longer. It seems to be getting larger as you can see in the pictures.

The affected area on his cheek doesn’t seem to bother him as he does not scratch at it or lick it obsessively. We have tried benzoyl peroxide
a few times but doesn’t seem to help

His diet hasn’t changed at all. We recently moved into a house that previously had dogs but not sure what kind. We just know because
our dogs are always digging up bones in the backyard.

He is mainly an inside dog except for when we are at work, then they are out back.

Hi Justin,
What a cute little dog you have!! For this problem of hair loss and redness on his muzzle, I suggest you have a skin scraping done to check for Demodex mange mites, and also a fungal culture to rule out ringworm.

See our page on dog skin conditions.

Both of these problems are found in young dogs, especially after stress (vaccinations, neutering, move to a new house, etc.).

Make sure he is on a healthy diet, and consider a RAW diet for him. And DO NOT give him any unnecessary vaccinations. In fact, it may be best to seek the help of a holistic veterinarian to write an exemption form to avoid vaccinations. Demodex mites are found in dogs that have a compromised immune system, so it is contra-indicated to vaccinate these dogs.

Avoid toxic flea/tick products, and check our page on Dog Flea Treatment. Also, check out Wondercide.

And, lastly, you may need to boost his immune system, with one of these products:

1. Missing Link Canine Formula
2. Immuplex from Standard Process
3. OrthoMolecular Specialties, Mega C Powder

What was the diagnosis? My 1 year old has the same thing? Ringworm culture won’t be back for 14 days.

Dear Anonymous and Daisy’s mom,

The previous comment was from 2013, and the subscriber never sent us a follow-up report. For your own dogs, I am unable to comment. I no longer assist with online services, at this time. Instead, I am devoting more time to my patients that I can see ‘in person’.

Take care,
Dr. Carol Jean Tillman
