Natura brand pet food & their purchase by Proctor and Gamble

What are everyone's thoughts about Proctor and Gamble purchasing Natura brand pet food?

I was absolutely appalled when I read that information. I am switching pet food brands!

Needless to say, I am very annoyed. I did a lot of what I thought was well-worth research for finding a pet food brand that was safe and healthy for my 3 cats and 3 dogs. Now, I'm having to go through it all over again. I am so frustrated with commercial brands.

I am very tempted to make my pets' food. I'm just afraid that their nutritional needs would not be met in home-made food.

So disappointing....
by: Anonymous

Since placing my animals on organic or holistic, natural foods, my vet bills dropped to nothing. I do not trust P&G to maintain the quality that we are accustomed to with these brands and I am thoroughly disappointed.

EVO
by: Anonymous

I too, had done extensive research in the dog food area. I came to the conclusion EVO was the best for my two Pyrs. I lost two previously to cancer.

Now I'm looking for something new.

I know companies like P&G have to show a profit, and to do that you cut corners for you share holders. The food will be cheapened. My philosophy has always been if you can buy it in a mega store, it was probably crap. So I try to avoid places like Petsmart and Petco, and stick to the small time vendors, but now I'm at a loss. Any ideas on what to feed?

Organic Pet Digest Response
by:

Hi Stephanie,

Thanks for your question and comments about this recent acquisition (for those who haven't heard about it, here's the press release).

Here is what the founder and owner of Natura had to say about it:

"It's time for the right company to take our brands to the next level of growth. P&G is that company. We know that P&G will honor our history as they capitalize on their strengths to build these brands."

Given the history of commercial pet food, including their roll in the recall of dog food a few years back, we were also a bit concerned when we learned of this.

At the same time, given the increasing health-consciousness of pet owners and their steady shift towards healthier pet foods, this comes as no surprise and could actually be a GOOD thing for the health and well-being of pets in general. Despite natural and organic dog foods' growing popularity, there are still far too many pet owners who simply "don't know what they don't know". They continue to feed their pets the cheap, unhealthy foods with the pretty packaging that they find in their local grocery store aisles.

Big business getting involved in natural and organic pet food means that they are responding to consumer demands. This means we're winning the fight against unhealthy pet food!

For P&G to change the formula or approach of any of Natura's products would be to contradict the purpose of the acquisition, which is to tap into the healthy part of the pet food market. If they change direction with Natura's foods, Organic Pet Digest and the rest of the holistic dog care community will be all over them, and our "part of the market" will be closed off to them, probably forever.

We're taking a wait-and-see approach, but until P&G makes a misstep with Natura, we're going to view this a big step towards increasing awareness of the importance of natural and organic dog food to the health and well-being of all our pets.

Regarding your question about preparing your own dog food, we think that's a great idea! It's not as difficult as you think, is just as healthy - if not healthier - than anything you can buy at the store, and it may even save you money.
