Innova almost killed my dog NEW
by: Anonymous

In October 2010 our Chessy stated having skin issues and by December I was having her anal glands done at least once a week. This continued through 2011 and by July she could not be pet for it bothered her. She was taking Benadryl multiple times a day and baths in prescription shampoos and oatmeal. Due to open sores and tests she was put on many antibiotics as well. By September 2011 the vet that I knew and trusted told me she had a staph infection that has taken over her organs and her body would build a tolerance to any antibiotic. He was preparing me for her to be put down or live a life in pain. I went to another vet and he had me switch her food after a week of tests and Q&A’s. In looking into different foods I found that in May 2010 P&A took over Nutura and there were many complaints and reviews with similar issues that we were going through. She is healthy dog to this day and I am thankful she did not die or get put down in fall 2011.

altering formulas
by: eliz

My daughter worked in a pet store (1990’s), after much research she felt Canidae & Felidae were the best for our pets. Used for many years till we noticed major not so good changes in skin, energy and poop. When i wrote to them about the results they said they had changed to a better formula and said it was our pets not the food. 2 dogs and 6 cats all having the same problems after the formula change, don’t think so. Changed to Canine/feline Caviar but became real hard to find( then they also changed recipe). Currently feed Instinct, Blue Buffalo products for dogs and BG and BFF for the cats with ok results, always watching for changes.

Innova Cat & Kitten Dry – Something’s wrong!
by: Superchiller

Just FYI, my girlfriend and I are heavily involved in rescue work, and we have quite a few cats of our own as well. We’ve been feeding a dry mixture of Purina One and Innova Cat & Kitten for several years, and our cats have really loved it and been very healthy.

However, something has changed since P&G bought Natura. The 15lb Innova bags we’ve been buying now contain a lot more “dust”, or crumbled bits of food, than they used to. We never used to see this “food dust” in the past, but have seen it a lot lately.

What’s worse, our cats no longer are excited about the Innova dry food. They often leave it in the bowls after eating, something they NEVER used to do. We only feed our cats twice a day and never leave food out 24/7, to prevent them from overeating and getting fat. So when breakfast or dinner time came, they’d eat every crumb (each cat always got his/her own bowl). They no longer do that, in fact they have lost interest in the Innova part of the food it seems.

We have decided to discontinue the Innova as part of the mix of dry food, and found a substitute in a new dry food called “Simply Nourish” (that contains no by-products and good quality ingredients).

I warn anyone who has used Innova in the past to take a look at the food; something’s changed for the worse. It isn’t surprising at all, based on P&G’s past history. We never wanted to support P&G since they fund animal torture for their IAMS products, and now we’re decided, no more products from this company at all, and that includes anything by Natura.

So disappointing….
by: Anonymous

Since placing my animals on organic or holistic, natural foods, my vet bills dropped to nothing. I do not trust P&G to maintain the quality that we are accustomed to with these brands and I am thoroughly disappointed.

EVO
by: Anonymous

I too, had done extensive research in the dog food area. I came to the conclusion EVO was the best for my two Pyrs. I lost two previously to cancer.

Now I’m looking for something new.

I know companies like P&G have to show a profit, and to do that you cut corners for you share holders. The food will be cheapened. My philosophy has always been if you can buy it in a mega store, it was probably crap. So I try to avoid places like Petsmart and Petco, and stick to the small time vendors, but now I’m at a loss. Any ideas on what to feed?

Organic Pet Digest Response
by:

Hi Stephanie,

Thanks for your question and comments about this recent acquisition .

Here is what the founder and owner of Natura had to say about it:

“It’s time for the right company to take our brands to the next level of growth. P&G is that company. We know that P&G will honor our history as they capitalize on their strengths to build these brands.”

Given the history of commercial pet food, including their roll in the recall of dog food a few years back, we were also a bit concerned when we learned of this.

At the same time, given the increasing health-consciousness of pet owners and their steady shift towards healthier pet foods, this comes as no surprise and could actually be a GOOD thing for the health and well-being of pets in general. Despite natural and organic dog foods’ growing popularity, there are still far too many pet owners who simply “don’t know what they don’t know”. They continue to feed their pets the cheap, unhealthy foods with the pretty packaging that they find in their local grocery store aisles.

Big business getting involved in natural and organic pet food means that they are responding to consumer demands. This means we’re winning the fight against unhealthy pet food!

For P&G to change the formula or approach of any of Natura’s products would be to contradict the purpose of the acquisition, which is to tap into the healthy part of the pet food market. If they change direction with Natura’s foods, Organic Pet Digest and the rest of the holistic dog care community will be all over them, and our “part of the market” will be closed off to them, probably forever.

We’re taking a wait-and-see approach, but until P&G makes a misstep with Natura, we’re going to view this a big step towards increasing awareness of the importance of natural and organic dog food to the health and well-being of all our pets.

Regarding your question about preparing your own dog food, we think that’s a great idea! It’s not as difficult as you think, is just as healthy – if not healthier – than anything you can buy at the store, and it may even save you money.
