How the Healthy Label Test Dog Food Ratings are Determined

To determine the dog food ratings for each food, the label is applied to Organic Pet Digest’s proprietary, holistic-veterinarian-approved Healthy Label Test. The test’s algorithm places a specific importance weighting on each dog food or treat label characteristic and calculates a score from 1 to 5.
Why aren’t there any
dog treats on the list?
The Healthy Label Test was designed to find dog foods that meet all of your dog’s dietary needs while avoiding all harmful ingredients. While there are many great and healthy dog treats out there, none are intended to be fed exclusively. For more information and treat recommendations, see our Choosing the Right Dog Treats page.
Among other factors, to earn a ‘5 out of 5’ dog food rating the food must pass several minimum standards, including:
- Complete, balanced and 100% nutritious ingredients
- Zero potentially harmful ingredients
- Contain no artificial colors, chemical preservatives or by-products
- Ingredients must not have been exposed to antibiotics, herbicides or pesticides
- Contain no "filler" foods (unhealthy food like sugar or corn syrup that takes the place of healthy food)
- Contain no Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO's)
