Bark collar dog training is used only when your dog seems bark collar dog trainingto bark at just about anything that moves and is causing a problem for you, your family or your neighbors.

Considerations before purchasing & the 2 Types of Bark Collars

Top 2 Traditional Bark Collars (one for larger dogs and one for smaller dogs)

Considerations Before Purchasing & the
2 Types of Bark Collar Dog Training Tools

There are certain dogs that develop a bad habit of nervous barking which is usually accompanied by high anxiety or some other type of mental instability.  For some dogs, they develop obsessive barking simply out of boredom.  Others are a result of our hectic lifestyles which often leave the dog at home alone for hours each day.

Whatever the reason, obsessive barking is annoying for you and unhealthy for your dog and therefore needs to be stopped.  Since you most likely won’t be there to correct the barking every time it happens, a bark collar dog training tool may be the right solution.

There are two different types of bark collars…
  1. Citronella Anti Bark Collar
  2. The first is the more recently developed bark collar that consists of a small black box which sits in the center of your dog’s neck, held by a typical flat banded collar.  This small black box is a sound activated invention that holds a citronella liquid that is sprayed each time the dog barks.  Dogs hate the smell of citronella and will generally be deterred from barking to prevent the stench from re-occurring.
Is Citronella Safe?

Yes, citronella solutions have been found to be extremely safe.  The sprayer is ozone-friendly, and the citronella essence is a natural essential oil that has been used in many human, animal and environmental applications.  It is considered non-toxic, especially at the very low levels given off by the best collars which contain less than 10% citronella oil.

Many dog owners have found this type of bark collar to work extremely well at preventing their dog from barking excessively.  We recommend that you try this method first before resorting to the traditional bark collars.

  1. Traditional Bark Collar Dog Training
  2. The second type of bark collar is the more traditional bark collar that works using the shock system of training.

It is a similar sound activated box that sits in the center of the dog’s neck and transmits
a slight shock each time the dog barks.  Many dogs respond well to the very minimum level of shock transmitted by these collars.
As mentioned on our Shock Collar for Dogs page, they are NOT meant to punish or hurt a dog.   When set at the correct level, they merely divert the dog’s attention through surprise and a sense of slight discomfort.

We only recommend shock collars as a last resort if and when other training collars and methods have been unsuccessful.  We want to stress the importance of correct and educated usage of any type of shock collar on your dog.

This video reinforces the proper mindset of an owner or trainer who plans to use a shock collar…it also humorously shows how shock collars feel on various settings…

This is not the time to try to save money as cheap shock collars are usually too strong and can injure your dog.  Again, read and understand the manual before use and consider working with a professional trainer.

Here are our recommendations.  Give the citronella anti bark collar a try first…

The Best Citronella Anti Bark Collar

Premier Gentle Spray Bark Collar

The Premier Gentle Spray Bark Collar works in a simple yet effective manner, which detects your dog’s bark and, in turn, emits a spritz of citronella upwards towards their nose.  As mentioned above, citronella is harmless to your dog’s health but proven to be thoroughly disliked by dogs.

There are owners who have shared success stories with the citronella anti-bark collars that had little to no success using the shock system collars.  It is definitely worth a try!bark collar dog training

The Top 2 Traditional Bark Collars

PetSafe Deluxe Bark Control (for dogs 8 pounds or more)

This reliable bark collar uses a vibration sensor and a microphone to sense excessive barking.  When the dog barks, the collar sends a slight shock, which inhibits additional barking.

The collar has 18 “static correction” modes, which allows you to adjust the correction to your dog’s temperament and learn what level your dog responds best to.

We appreciate that this collar comes with a thorough control manual along with a DVD, which many owners find comforting when dealing with a new technology such as this.  The PetSafe Deluxe Bark Control collar also comes with a Lifetime limited warranty.

If your dog weighs less than 8 lbs, this bark collar will be too large.  Please take a look at the bark collars made especially for small dogs listed below...

Deluxe Little Dog Bark Control (for dogs less than 8 pounds)

We recommend this bark collar for small dogs because is utilizes Nano technology, making it the smallest and lightest bark collar available on the market.

This collar is unique because it uses a technology called Temperament Learning Systems, which tracks the number of corrections needed to reduce and in most cases eliminate excessive barking.

There are ten settings on this bark collar, which makes it easy to adjust the corrections to the level that works for your dog.

The Deluxe Little Dog Bark Control collar’s product qualities include:
PetSafe Deluxe Little Dog Bark Control - Up to 55 lbs.
  • Patented Perfect bark correction ensures that your dog’s bark is the only sound that will cause the correction
  • The receiver is waterproof and extremely durable
  • Collar features a LED color light to indicate good/low battery power
  • Order includes battery module along with operating guide
  • Adjustable collar fits necks up to 16 inches
  • Limited Lifetime Warranty
  • Price is $79.99
Certain dog owners have commented on the effectiveness of this collar and stated that it did not work that well for their small dog.  Other owners found this collar to work extremely well at preventing excessive barking.

Unfortunately, when it comes to this type of training method, not all dogs will respond to the static-like corrections emitted by these collars.  Remember -- try the GentleSpray Citronella Anti-Bark Collar first!
