Hot New Dog Travel Companies & Tools

Bringing your dog along on a family vacation can be so much fun, but it can also add unwanted stress, frustration and expenses.

Thankfully, over the past few years companies in the U.S. have made great strides towards becoming more and more dog friendly, making it easier for us dog lovers to include our furry friends on almost any type of vacation.

We did some digging and came across a few awesome new dog-friendly travel companies plus some new on-line tools that will make planning your “dog inclusive” vacation easier than you ever dreamed possible!

Pet Airways - Dogs and Cats Flying First Class

Alright, for those of you who have yet to hear about the coolest new airline to hit the skies, here’s the low-down.

Pet Airways, a new airline that only services dogs and cats, ran its first successful flight this past July 14th and the reviews are in… two paws up, up and away!

The way it works is…

  1. You purchase a ticket for your dog or cat online through the Pet Airways website.

  2. When it comes time for travel day, you are allowed to drop off the furry passenger up to 72 hours before the flight departs.

  3. They will wait in the Pet Airways designated waiting area, where they will be fed and walked accordingly.

  4. Once the animals are actually on the plane they all fly in safe travel crates, which are placed in the pressurized, temperature controlled main cabin… not the cargo hold like on many domestic airlines.

And get this... these cabins are actually scented to keep the animals calm and happy. Plus there are human pet attendants who watch over the animals throughout the entire flight, refreshing water and offering a soothing voice when needed.

Currently, Pet Airways is only able to offer service 5 U.S. cities including New York, Washington DC, Chicago, Denver and Los Angeles. They have plans to expand their service once they are able.

Fares start at $149 for a one-way ticket, which is comparable to an animal ticket in the cargo hold of one of the major domestic airlines.

New iPhone App for On-The-Go Dog Information

We know that not everyone owns an iPhone, but this “app” (downloadable application) is so handy that we just had to include it on our list. If you are one of those pet owners who is constantly on-the-go with your dog…

it might be worth getting an iPhone just for this app!

Nestle Purina PetCare introduced "petcentric places", which gives dog owners access, directions and information to tons of “pet-centered places" and activities all over the U.S. such as…

  • Lodging, Dog Parks, Beaches, Campgrounds, Amusement Parks and Travel Accommodations
This app will also help you find all sorts of dog care resources,including...
  • Veterinarians, Animal Shelters, Pet Sitters, Kennels, Groomers and Dog Walkers
Yet another great thing about this app is that it allows users to rate their experiences at different dog-friendly facilities.

Overall, this app is incredibly helpful and can be your source for almost any on-the-go dog needs. Plus, it’s free to download from the iTunes store, which makes it even better.

OPD Web Site Updates

Find Answers to Your Dog Care Questions Quicker & Easier

We now have over 150 pages of free veterinarian-endorsed content!

That amount of information can be difficult to navigate to find the answers to your questions as they come up. To help you find what you need faster, we’ve tweaked the site a bit…

  1. We added the following headings to the navigation bar in the left margin of each page to help you quickly explore your topic of interest…

    • Vet Care
    • Food & Treats
    • Illnesses & Remedies
    • Health & Wellness
    • Travel
    • Grooming
    • Product Reviews
    • OPD Community

  2. As always, we have search engines in the left margin and at the bottom of all of our pages. Search all of our content quickly and easily by typing a keyword into the box and clicking “Search.”

  3. There’s now a complete site map at the bottom of our home page with categories and links to all of our pages.

  4. And as many of you already know, if you can’t find what you’re looking for in the free content, you can always ask our veterinarians directly via My Online Vet.

We hope that our changes make it easier than ever to get the answers you need, right when you need them.
